Drains can be pains if they are not properly taken care of. Clean drains make for a happy sink and a happy homeowner or renter. If you rent an apartment, you may or may not be able to get your maintenance crew come out just to make your sink drain better. If you own your home, you have no designated maintenance crew.
When a drain gets clogged, you might not be able to take a shower, dispose of your cooking waste or brush your teeth. But here’s a hint – baking soda is a common household staple that can act as a wonderful drain cleaner.
Here is a simple, do-it-yourself method to clean or unclog your drains in any part of your house with baking soda and vinegar.
First, boil a pot of water. Pour that boiling hot water down the drain.
Second, measure half a cup of baking soda. Let the baking soda sit for several minutes to get down into the cracks of the drain.
Next, pour a mixture of one cup of vinegar and one cup of very hot water down the drain.
Cover the drain with a plug or drain stopper, and leave it for five to 10 minutes.
The baking soda will loosen up any grime from the top to the bottom of your drain, and then the bubbly, chemical reaction with the vinegar will loosen it.
After five or 10 minutes have passed, you should pour another pot of boiling water down the drain to wash away all of the slime that you just loosened off the walls of your pipes.
The fizzy bubbles should help clean those impossible to reach parts of your drain that needed a little TLC. A happy drain makes for a happy plumbing system in your entire house. Make sure to stay stocked up on baking soda in your kitchen for more than just cooking!
