This is Allie, the plumber’s apprentice, with Mr. Plumber Plumbing Company back at St. Philip’s College southwest campus to talk to you today about your garbage disposal. Now with Thanksgiving coming up, you’re going to be sending more down your garbage disposal drain than just water. So if you want to make sure you don’t see us on Turkey Day, follow these easy tips.
To avoid a disaster on your holiday weekend, make sure you watch what goes down your drain. Vegetables can become stringy and cause clumps, potatoes can congeal, starches expand with water, and grease solidifies, causing a real gross glue that causes disaster in your garbage disposal.
Here are some other things you can do to avoid having a disaster on your holiday weekend:
Make sure that you throw away any large clumps of food; don’t put that down the garbage disposal.
Also, a general rule, if you wouldn’t feed it to a baby, don’t put it down your garbage disposal drain.
Ice cubes can be a big help. If you throw them in the garbage disposal, it helps to break up some food particles.
Make sure that you run the cold water 20 to 30 seconds before and after grinding any food.
If these helpful hints don’t help you out, don’t forget you can contact a professional. At Mr. Plumber, we make sure to staff plenty of people on the Thanksgiving holiday, as it is our busiest time of the year. So if you get stuck, call Mr. Plumber.
